The taste of Hungary – diversity of beer

We are moving to a land full of green plains and beautiful cities. Despite the fact that Hungarian people are mostly known for their insane pálinka making and consumption, they never lacked the skills of beer drinking. Or brewing. One interesting fact about Hungarians is that they really like fruity tastes and they tend to spice things up with the colorful flavors, especially when it comes to beers.

Hungary must be on your list if you are curious of culture and history, but also if you like to keep your belly full, considering the amazing dishes and beverages. In this country, people love to drink or to offer tourists a wide variety of beers, because their top brands of many many years have been the ones who are selling the most exciting and new types of taste. These ones are no different than Dreher and Soproni.

Dreher

Dreher has an interesting history: the brand was created first when Hungary was very differently built, back in 1854, and it is still functioning as a beer factory in the Kőbánya area of Budapest today. It originates from Antal Dreher, who is called the “king of beer” by the locals, because he was an innovator in the Hungarian beer history. He implemented bottom-fermented brewing, and invened a new type of beer in that era: the lagerbier.

Dreher offers everyone a likeable option: you can have the standard, 5.0% GOLD lager. If you want a lighter taste, there is also a 4.0% version. For the bold ones who prefer an more extreme and stronger beer, the good choice would be the 7.3% BAK dark beer. Some other types of Dreher: COLD HOP (4.5%), BLONDE ALE (4.6%), SOUR CHERRY (4.0%), PEACH (4.0%), 24 ALCOHOL FREE (0.0%), 24 MARACUYA-MELON (0.0%), 24 LEMON (0.0%), 24 SOUR CHERRY-BLACKBERRY (0.0%), 24 MINT (0.0%), 24 RASPBERRY (0.0%).

Soproni

From the capital, we travel to the West of the country, to the border, our next stop being Sopron, which inspired the Soproni beer as well. This brand is another fan favorite, and is said to be the one with the freshest taste.

Soproni was invented in the end of the 19th century, in 1895, and ever since then, they have kept their brewing traditions, one of these being the use of local ingredients only. In the past 100 years, the brand extended and now has many more factories in the country, while the original one in Sopron is waiting for visitors, and there are tours organized.

This brand is another great example of fruity and colorful diversity. The beers are categorized in three different subgroups, which are the following: classical lagers (these ones are the regular lagers that most beer drinkers choose); Óvatos Duhaj (“play safe”) which consists of the special Soproni beers, like sour cherry ale, IPA, APA, and “Demon” (dark beer). Last but not least, there is also a wide selection of alcohol free, fruity versions (elderflower-lemon, pear-lemon, lime-mint, etc.). These are of key importance for the brand, because they accentuate the fact that they want everybody to enjoy the taste of Hungarian summer, from an alcoholic or non-alcoholic point of view.
