Alle trinken!: Germany as the beer capital of the world

If you love beer, then you know about Oktoberfest, Germany’s famous annual beer festival (although it is not the only beer tradition worth checking out). Germans obviously love their brew, and they are very strict about quality, which is why Germany boasts an official beer purity laws (Reinheitsgebot), which have been around since 1516. In short, beer must be made using exclusively water, hops, yeast, and malt. Beer not exclusively using barley-malt must be top-fermented. With that, let’s take a look at some of Germany’s famous beers!

Krombacher

Krombacher brewery produces Germany’s second most popular brew, the Krombacher Pils. All varieties of Krombacher have one thing in common: the company uses Felsquellwasser, that is naturally soft water from a rock spring which is then used in its natural state with no need for processing, being one of the few breweries in the world to do so. This contributes to the Krombacher’s “special taste and freshness”, according to the brewery’s official website.

The brewery also has a special interest in nature conservation, collaborating with 2023 edition of Wacken Open Air Festival on their “Growling Creatures” project, to bring awareness to endangered species.

Beck’s

Another pillar of german brewery, Beck’s traces all the way back to the 19th century, and is one Germany’s biggest and most well-known beer exports.

Its selection is varied, from unfiltered to lemon brews, but its most classic is a German-style pilsner, a light beer characterized by its pale color, bitterness, and crispness. Its success can be traced back to the brewery’s commitment to traditional brewing methods

Their most recent ventures include a brew by the name of Autonomous, about which the brewery claims that “from recipe to marketing, every decision in the making of this beer was made by A.I.” As they put it, “we didn’t make Autonomous, Autonomous made itself.”

You can read all about this process on Beck’s official website.
